Wind turbine fallout a factor in Hamlin races

HAMLIN — While there aren't any plans in the works to build a wind farm in Hamlin, past fights over turbine regulation will cast shadows over this year's races for town board.

Four candidates are vying for two open seats on the Hamlin Town Board.

Democrats Rodney W. Zulkosky, 50, and Tom E. Jensen are running against Republicans Craig A. Goodrich and Paul S. Rath.

Their platform calls for making town government more transparent and responsive, something they say was not the case while the town hashed out a 2008 law regulating wind turbine development in the town. Despite calls from residents to require turbines to be at least 1,700 feet from an existing home, the board adopted a smaller 1,200-foot setback. The law was struck down in state Supreme Court.

"Some people feel the board listens, but doesn't hear them and aren't doing what the people put them there for," said Jensen, 56, a parts manager with Conway GMC. He has three years of experience on the town's Planning Board, was a member of the wind tower committee and made an unsuccessful bid for town board in 2005.
