Tonello Makes Bid for State Senate

Elmira - The Mayor of Elmira is setting his sights on Albany. John Tonello has announced that he will be running for the New York State Senate.

John Tonello said being the Mayor of Elmira, as well as being raised here, has given him an understanding of what this area needs. Tonello said he'll continue his responsibilities as the mayor during campaigning. He said aging water and sewer systems, deteriorating roads and bringing in new business are at the top of his agenda.

The 53rd senate district includes Chemung, Schuyler, Steuben and Yates counties, and parts of Tompkins County. The seat's currently held by Republican Senator George Winner. Winner tells us he does intend to seek re-election. But, he hasn't made a formal announcement yet.
