Senator Schumer Iberdrola Letter by Andy McEvoy

Senator Schumer,

With all due respect sir, how can you be so blatantly naive to believe that the Iberdrola / Energy East merger will be good for the "people" and "taxpayers" of New York State. No company should be allowed to monopolize something as critical as our energy "supply and distribution". And a foreign company at that.
The Public Service Commission has stated that this will cost the customers in NYS more money in higher rates. You should be supporting the recommendations of the PSC.

The revenue that Iberdrola will bleed out of New York State will be far greater than any so-called contribution they will make. It is disgraceful that a public official such as yourself will put the financial growth of a foreign company ahead of the concerns of the hard working people of New York State.

You seem to be following Iberdrola's $2 Billion dollar carrot. Is Iberdrola committing to spending $2 Billion in NYS for labor and materials purchased locally or are they just talking about building $2 Billion dollars worth of turbines which are purchased out of state and more likely, from overseas? What is the "real" cost vs. benefit for the taxpayers? The subsidies provided to this company and others for "wind facility" development should not be allowed. It's my tax dollars and I do not support it.

Any revenue pumped in to local economies for wind turbine developments is short lived and much of the work is done by out of state companies. The projected benefits are greater than what is actually realized when the jobs are completed.

I can't imagine why you would be so adamant about seeing this deal through. I only hope the PSC stands their ground and keeps their focus on the People's best interest.

In a recent article in The Guardian, one of Britain's leading energy providers warned "that Britain will need substantial fossil fuel generation to backup the renewable energy it needs to meet European Union targets". It stated "it would require up to 90%" of the amount of renewable electricity generation "as backup from coal and gas plants to ensure supply when intermittent renewable supplies were not available".

I would like to see you and the other elected officials start thinking rationally about solving the energy needs of our country. Nuclear has been a part of the solution and needs to be a bigger part. Industrial Wind Turbine electricity generation will only result in constructing more fossil fuel and nuclear electricity generation facilities to back them up. So why not skip the windpower altogether and save the taxpayers Billions of dollars and let the taxpayers "pump" the money into our local economies.

Sincerely,

Andy McEvoy
