Italy adopts six month moratorium

Italy, N.Y.

The Italy Town Board unanimously adopted a resolution establishing a six month moratorium on wind farm development in the town at a special meeting on Oct. 27.

During a public hearing on the local law, several residents thanked the board for denying Ecogen’s application to construct wind turbines in the town, and voiced their support for the moratorium. During the six months, the town will review and update the town’s comprehensive plan and zoning codes relative to wind farm development.

Near the end of the comments, Angela Ingraham drew chuckles from the audience and board alike when she said she supported the moratorium, but added, “I selfishly request it be extended 58 years. At that time I’ll be 108.”

Most of those who commented simply said they supported the moratorium, but many addressed the individual board members by name and said “Thank you.” to each of them.
Others offered recommendations for refining the town’s regulations for wind farm development, such as adding details about development on steep slopes.

Thor Vandehei said, “I really appreciate what you did. I know it was hard work. I hope that you base whatever you do on the latest sound science that’s out there.” He cautioned against basing any Italy laws on codes from other municipalities because it’s difficult to tell what science is behind other municipal codes.

About 25 people were on hand. None spoke in opposition to the direction the board is taking.
