The Wayne County Board of Supervisors voted Wednesday night to oppose a plan by the New York Power Authority to locate wind turbines in Lake Ontario off the county's shoreline.
After a public hearing where more than two dozen people spoke out against the plan, the board voted 15-0 to inform the power authority of its opposition.
The authority has set a June 1 deadline for proposals from wind energy companies to locate electricity-generating turbines in the New York waters of Lake Ontario and Lake Erie. Authorities said recently that 11 companies from around the world had expressed an intention to submit proposals.
The agency identified areas of the lakes, including a portion of the waters off Wayne County and other areas off the Monroe County shore, where turbines could be located.
Objections to the idea has arisen along the eastern shoreline of Lake Ontario, and elected officials in Jefferson and Oswego counties have already voted to express opposition. The resolution approved Wednesday by Wayne County supervisors cited concerns about tourism, migratory birds, and submerged cultural resources such as shipwrecks.
Authority officials have said they won't seek to locate turbines near communities that don't want them.
